Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Elsen, 1909 Mixed media. Mounted on canvas. Signed lower right. (Small chips, tears and stains). 143.5 x 95.5 cm Bibliography : Rennert, p. 112, no. 141. In this poster, we find all the elements that Cappiello likes to play with in his many posters for alcoholic beverages: the barrel - here the size of a thunderbolt; an attractive young woman - here perched on a ladder, pouring cherries into it; and finally, the advertising shortcut which, disregarding all reality, shows us the bottles being filled. The important thing is that the poster works, and it does! As we all know, kirsch is a distillate produced by a still. It's amusing to note that, no doubt pressed for time and short on imagination, Cappiello used the same image for a vine treatment product salesman... Except, of course, for a few details: these are no longer cherries, but bunches of grapes.
