In the footsteps of Lautrec.
With its rich port and vineyards, Bordeaux is home to one of France's oldest and most prestigious universities. The students' congress was an important event that warranted a poster.
In 1900, just before his death, Lautrec designed one that was published posthumously: a woman in a yellow dress, her face masked by a wolf, shows off her phenomenal breasts - quite a program. For 1907, it was Cappiello who was called in, in a more suggestive yet mischievous way, depicting a young beauty with her skirt raised high, filled with bunches of grapes that she presses into the glass of an enthusiastic student. Perhaps unconsciously, Cappiello is repeating the Moulin Rouge layout that made Lautrec famous in 1891 (Wolfang Wittrock, Toulouse-Lautrec, The Complete Prints, Sotheby's, London, 1985, pl. 1B or C). In the foreground, it's no longer La Goulue and Valentin le désossé, but the young woman and the student. It's no longer the petticoat that catches the eye, but the yellow dress. No lanterns, but bunches of grapes at the top of the picture; and finally, it's not a group of revelers, but a circle of delighted students in the background. Note, however, that there are no female students.
