Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942)
Cognac Robin, 1906
Mixed media. Wrapped in cloth.

(Restorations. Tears. One restored tear about 30 cm at top right).
117 x 86.5 cm

Bibliography :
Rennert, p. 89, no. 97.

One can be lost in conjecture trying to analyze this image... in English (the Charentais are readily Anglomaniacs) a robin is a robin which, alas, bears no resemblance at all to this lush red and yellow bird... and why look for logic? Albert Robin was convinced that this image would help him sell his products, and it was printed (Rennert, p. 89, no. 97). Against a dark monochrome background, Cappiello plays his favorite game with scale: this time it's the bird that's oversized.
