MASEREEL (Frans). My picture book. Belvès: Pierre Vorms, 1956. -In-4, paperback, filled cover, modern black cloth spine slipcase (L. Strid). First edition of this album by Frans Masereel (1889-1972). This Belgian artist was one of the great European engravers of the 20th century. An illustrator of numerous literary works, he is best known for his woodcuts, many of which form picture novels. These collections depict human misery, the greed of oppressors, the suffering of the oppressed and the torments of passion. This one features 38 original full-page woodcuts. The edition was limited to 155 numbered copies, signed by Masereel at the justification. ONE OF THE FIRST 20 ON PUR CHIFFON D'AUVERGNE DES MOULINS RICHARD DE BAS, accompanied by the proof of a refused woodcut, numbered and signed by the artist. Very well preserved copies, despite two small tears on the cover, enriched with 4 advertising leaflets from the publisher and an ex-dono in Swedish on the second blank page. Beautiful slipcase by Swedish bookbinder Lars Strid.
