LACROIX (Pamphile de).
Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de la révolution de Saint-Domingue.
Paris: Pillet Ainé, 1819. - 2 volumes in-8, green marbled calf, double gilt fillet on covers, ornate smooth spine, marbled edges (period binding).

Sabin, 38495.
First edition.

Lieutenant-General Pamphile de Lacroix (1774-1841) was part of the army of Saint-Domingue, under General Leclerc. In particular, he was in charge of the negotiations "that led to the surrender of the west and south, and the defection of three-quarters of Toussaint-Louverture's army."

In this work, he sets out to relate the events that took place in Saint-Domingue from 1789 to 1802, some of which he personally experienced during the 13 months he spent on the island. He drew the rest of his knowledge from the correspondence of the Ministry of the Navy, from the work of the commission of inquiry chaired by Garran de Coulon, and from numerous French and British eyewitness accounts.

This is one of the main sources for knowledge of the events that took place on the island during this troubled period. More than a memoir, the author offers a truly general study of the Haitian revolution, tracing its political, social and economic aspects.

An "Explanation of some terms used in Saint-Domingue" and an interesting "Note relative à la population de couleur" are included at the beginning of the book.
The edition is illustrated with a fold-out map showing the French army's siege of Crete in Pierrot, and a large, handsome fold-out map of the island of Saint Domingue drawn especially for the book by colonel and geographer Pierre Lapie (1777-1850). It also includes an out-of-text fold-out table showing the "État général des forces de terre et de mer employées à l'expédition de Saint-Domingue, sous le gouvernement du capitaine-général Leclerc" ("General state of land and sea forces employed in the expedition to Santo Domingo, under the government of Captain-General Leclerc").

Used rubbing to bindings. Scattered foxing. Map torn but not missing.
Rochechouart family, with heraldic ex-libris stamp on faux-titres.
