CHARTON (Édouard). Le Tour du monde. Nouveau journal des voyages. Paris, Londres, Leipzig: Librairie de L. Hachette et Cie, 1860-1894; Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1895-1906. - 48 volumes in-4, half red morocco for volumes published in the 19th century and half burgundy morocco for those published in the 20th century, ribbed spines, speckled head, untrimmed (period bindings). Complete collection of the first series and set of the first 12 years of the second, of this famous weekly published, for the first years, under the direction of Édouard Charton. The first series appeared from January 1860 to December 1894. The second series, which began in January 1895 and ran until 1914, was entitled "Le Tour du monde, journal des voyages et des voyageurs". Here we have all the volumes published from 1860 to 1906. The set is illustrated with numerous engravings in the text and on full pages, as well as several maps and plans. Artists include Grandsire, Français, Daubigny, Janet-Lange, Riou and Gustave Doré. According to M. Huret: "The 19th century was truly the century of difference in the finite world. A privileged witness to the discovery or in-depth exploration of the world - be it Europe, Africa, Asia, America or Oceania: a weekly magazine - Le Tour du Monde - which, from 1860 to 1914, presented over 700 discoveries, explorations or travel reports written by more than 500 authors... This magazine has become rare for two reasons: on the one hand, it's virtually impossible to study this period without referring to it; on the other, its countless woodcuts, many of them full-page, its maps, portraits and drawings, constitute truly exceptional iconographic documentation today. " (Huret, "La Revue Le Tour du Monde, 1860-1914, Étude d'ensemble et tables". 1977). Copies of the second series are complete with the chronicles that also appeared with each issue, bound at the end of each volume. Copies well preserved. Some scattered foxing, not serious.
