[PRUDHOMME (Louis-Marie)].
Les Crimes des reines de France, depuis le commencement de la monarchie jusqu'à Marie-Antoinette.
London, 1792. - In-8, havana half calf, spine ribbed and decorated, edges speckled (contemporary binding).

Uncommon second edition of one of the most violent pamphlets ever written against women's participation in power.

Profoundly anti-feminist, it was long and falsely attributed to the famous woman of letters, novelist and feminist Louise-Félicité Guinement de Keralio Robert (1758-1822). It could be the work of Louis-Marie Prudhomme, the book's publisher, or of a Swiss intellectual called Jean-Pierre Bérenger (1737-1807).

Whoever the author, in this book he defends the idea that a woman is worse than a man when she has to command, and reviews all the queens of France right up to Marie-Antoinette, whom he condemns with verve.

The edition is illustrated with 5 plates, including a frontispiece. Except for the frontispiece, this is an inverted reproduction of the engravings in the original edition. With the exception of the frontispiece, they bear De La Rue's signature, whereas the engravings in the original are unsigned.

Head cover missing, spine rubbed. Restored tear to frontispiece. Some scattered foxing.
