CABINET DES FÉES (Le) ; ou collection choisie des contes de fées, et autres contes merveilleux.
Genève, Barde, Manget & Compagnie ; Paris, Cuchet, 1785-1789. - 41 volumes in-12, red morocco, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed (modern bindings, unfinished).

Parallel in-12 edition to the in-8 edition of this famous collection of fairy tales from the 17th and 18th centuries, whose publication was initiated by Charles-Joseph de Mayer with the aim of rescuing from oblivion these texts, which were already difficult to find at the time.

The collection was planned as thirty volumes in in-8 or in-12 format, but 37 were published between 1785 and 1786, the thirty-seventh of which contained notes on the authors and a list of tales. The collection was completed in 1788 and 1789 with four volumes featuring the continuation of the "Thousand and One Nights" in translation by Dom Chavis and M. Cazotte.

Each volume, with the exception of the thirty-seventh, is illustrated with 3 copper-engraved plates after Clément-Pierre MARILLIER (1740-1808), for a total of 120 plates. The plates were printed slightly later than those in the in-8 edition.

Copies with full margins and absolutely complete. Unfortunately, the bindings are modern and largely unfinished, i.e. without gilding and with unglued endpapers. Only volumes 10, 13, 23, 26, 28 and 39 are fully finished.
Browning left by a bookmark on most plates. Non-missing tear to folio M3 of volume 13, with damage to text. Some browned leaves. Scattered foxing. Heavy freckling on first few leaves and first plate of volume 17.
