BOURSAULT (Edme). Le Médecin volant. Comédie Burlesque. Lyon : Charles Mathevet, 1666. In-12, burgundy calf, gilt roulette framing the boards, ribbed spine (20th-century binding). Lyon counterfeit of this comedy of Moliéresque interest, published one year after the original. According to Paul Lacroix: "Molière played, with prodigious success in Paris and the provinces, the farce of the Flying Doctor, which he never had printed. Edme Boursault undoubtedly wanted to appropriate a share of this success, by composing a Flying Doctor, which could compete with Molière's and which was performed at the theater of the Hôtel de Bourgogne, after having been performed in the provinces. This was perhaps the origin of the quarrel between the two comic authors" ("Bibliographie moliéresque" n°545). Some wear to binding. Leaves short of margins, with slight damage to some didascalies printed in the margin. Scattered foxing.
