ZOLA (Émile). Captain Burle. - How one dies. For a night of love. In the fields. La Fête à Coqueville. L'Inondation. Paris: G. Charpentier, 1883. - In-18, 185 x 126: (2 ff.), 340 pp. (2 ff. last blank), printed cover. Havana half-maroquin with corners, gilt fillets, ornate ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Yseux sr. de Thierry-Simier). First edition. One of 50 numbered copies on Hollande paper (no. 18), the only edition on large paper. A very fine copy bound by Yseux, enriched with an autograph letter signed by Zola, 2 pages in-8, dated April 16, 1883, addressed to a lady. This interesting missive concerns the German-language translation of the author's novels: "I would be very happy to entrust you with the German-language translations of my novels... For Capitaine Burle, write me what sum I would be paid for ownership of the German-language translation. For the next novel in the Rougon-Macquart series, which will be published in Paris in Gil Blas on November 15, the matter is a little more complicated. I'd like to sell the German translation, so that it appears in a magazine or newspaper at the same time as in France." A very well preserved copy.
