Shakyamuni Buddha statuette in gilded copper alloy, Nepal, early Malla period, 13th-14th century
The Buddha is seated cross-legged in dhyanasana, his right hand in bhumisparsha mudra touching the ground, wearing a diaphanous shangati with borders decorated with chiseled rice-grain decoration, elegantly draped over his left shoulder with fishtail ends and gathering in fan-shaped folds between his legs. Her rounded face, with large eyes lowered beneath high arched eyebrows and a finely drawn mouth, is flanked by long, slightly curved, pierced hanging earlobes. His hair is arranged in tight curls rising to a domed ushnisha. Probably originally mounted on a lotiform base, this has now disappeared. Only the fixing lugs remain.
Height: 20 cm; weight: 1700 g
Missing an inch, wear and cast defects.

Details such as the robust limbs, the delineated phalange joints on the outer part of the hand, the big toe of his right foot well separated from the rest, but also the smiling face, the almost closed eyes or the rice grain motif incised on the hem of his garment are characteristic of certain sculptures from the ancient Khasa Malla kingdom (western Nepal and western Tibet, c. 12th - 14th century).
