Gilded copper-alloy statuette of a Bodhisattva, possibly Avalokiteshvara Padmapani, Nepal, 17th century Seated on a double-row lotus base, right arm raised with hand in vitarka mudra, left hand resting on thigh. He is dressed in a well-folded monastic habit, with a scarf tied at the waist, separating to run down the back, over the shoulder and finally knotted at the bottom of the chest. Another long scarf passes over the shoulders and wraps around the arms. The legs are in an unusual position, the right in lotus position while the left is slightly lifted from the other in a lalitasana style. He is wearing the classical tiara with his hair up in a high bun. In his right hand, he holds a lotus flower (whose stem has unfortunately disappeared) on which is placed an attribute. The base is closed by a consecration plate incised with a double-vajra and a taijitu in the center. Height: 18 cm; weight: 1657 g The lotus flower stem is missing. Provenance : Douglas J. K. Wright Ltd. Oriental Art, London, August 1971. Reference: For a very similar model with the same iconography, see Brooklyn Museum, gift of Joseph H. Hazen, 1993.1904.4.
