MEXICO. CHARLOTTE (1840-1927) Empress of Mexico. L.A.S. "C", Mexico City August 25, 1865; 3pages in-8.
Interesting letter to a minister, as she heads the government in her husband's absence.
She would like to know if she can open letters addressed to the Emperor with the mention reservado or personal. Then she talks about Bazaine: "The marshal asks to pay half of the Mexican fines levied by his army into the country's coffers, saying that Mexico bearing the charges must have the benefits of war captures. But as I do not see any "prises de guerre" or anything that implies the right to do so, as indicated in the Treaty of Miramar, I think I will put this request in the category of matters reserved for the Emperor. I will do the same for a request for more precise orders to be addressed to Gal Thun to have him return to Puebla and go to the Oajaca side, which modifies the strategic position". She asks that an employee be available every day to take her instructions...
