Jean JAURÈS (1859- 1914). L.S. with autograph postscript (7 lines), Paris October 31, 1904, to Georges Lecomte; 3pages in-8, headed L'Humanité, daily socialist newspaper. Interesting letter on the beginnings of L'Humanité, after six and a half months of publication... "The statement of our editorial expenses since the start of the paper shows a fairly considerable monthly surplus over the sum placed at my disposal each month [...] Material difficulties, which recur daily at the time of the paper's composition and which are caused by the large number of our collaborators and the small size of our format, oblige us to reduce our collaborations". As a result, the paper will be doing away with "the news feeds you used to do for L'Humanité under the title of: L'Heure qui passe"... Jaurès adds in his own handwriting: "I've been overwhelmed. I'm completely deleting all the little columns on the 1st page - and reducing the others by more than half. I deeply regret this".
