Joseph-Ignace GUILLOTIN (1738-1814) physician and deputy, promoter of the guillotine. L.A.S., Paris 10 ventôse IX (March 1, 1801), to Citoyen Maire du 2e arrondissement; 2 pages in-4 (curious watermark with plow and faulx).
Interesting letter on vaccination.
Guillotin speaks of citizens Delaporte and André, who propose "to vaccinate the indigents of the arrondissement free of charge, and of the desire they have to contribute with me to this act of Benevolence". They will work together to "ensure the success of this important operation. [...] I will always consider myself too happy, Citizen Mayor, to be able to do something that could be useful to my fellow citizens, and agreeable to the magistrates who are concerned with the relief of humanity, and especially of the indigent class of the people". He wrote to him "on behalf of the Medical Committee established for the inoculation of vaccinia"...
