GEORGE III (1738-1820) King of Great Britain. 2 L.S. countersigned by Prime Minister Lord Frederick NORTH (1732-1792), plus one L.S. from Lord North, London September 30, 1783; 11pages in-fol., 2 addresses with arms seal under paper, and an envelope with red wax seal (cracks at folds); in English (transcription and translation enclosed). Important set on the restitution by Great Britain to France of the five trading posts in India. [The preliminaries to the peace treaty between France and Great Britain concerning the territories of America and Asia had been signed from February 5, 1783. The complete agreements, which together with their predecessors constitute the Treaty of Versailles, were finally signed on September 3, 1783, and the ratification clauses exchanged on September 19, between the plenipotentiaries of the two crowns and their sovereigns, George III and Louis XVI. This treaty, which opened a new era in history by recognizing the independence of the United States, returned to France its five trading posts in India (Chandernagor, Pondicherry, Karikal, Mahé and Yanaon) after the victorious battles of Bailli de Suffren. The documents in this file give very detailed orders for the restitution of these Indian trading posts to France, insisting on certain points of detail and ratification, asking British officers to be ready to deliver the strongholds which are to be returned to France by the definitive treaty, but which still remain under their command. George III and Lord North addressed to the Vice Admirals of the Blue Sir Edward Hughes and Sir Hyde Parker the "Order for Restitutions in the East Indies", recommending that French subjects in this part of India be assured of a safe, free and independent trade similar to that practiced by the previous Compagnie des Indes Françaises... George III and Lord North address the same "Order for Restitutions in the East Indies" to Sir Eyre Coote, Lieutenant General and Commander-in-Chief of the East India Territorial Forces. Letter from Lord North to Sir Edward Hughes, Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty's Fleet in the East Indies, forwarding the King's two orders, with details of the final orders...
