Jean-Paul SARTRE (1905-1980). Autograph manuscript, La progression synthétique ou l'histoire comme totalisation; 33pages in-4. Manuscript and philosophical notes relating to the Critique of Dialectical Reason, of which only the first volume appeared in 1960, and on which Sartre worked from 1957 to 1960. Manuscript with erasures and corrections, some pages not entirely filled in. The text is sometimes fragmentary. The first page bears the title: La progression synthétique ou l'histoire comme totalisation (Synthetic progression or history as totalization): "If the dialectical movement has sometimes appeared to us as a vain agitation, it is because we have descended to the fundamental foundations of collectivity. The order of knowledge was the opposite of the order of praxis. [...] But if we abandon critical knowledge for constructive unveiling, it is the order of being and praxis that imposes itself. If I want to clarify the nature of dialectical experience, I have to start with the philosopher or scholar himself, and determine the formal links that unite them with other men in a given society. But if I want to follow the synthetic enrichment of history, to understand any epoch, and particularly our own, that is, to decipher the practical totalization in which I am already integrated, I must start from needs and work as man's fundamental relationship to matter within and without himself, and from production as the organization of men among themselves, determined by the scarcity of the relationship of reciprocity"... In particular, Sartre studied the relationship between boss and employee, the alienation of the individual from the Other, the influence of the machine, the function of the boss, etc. Former Daniel Sickles collection (Littérature du XXe siècle, 13-15 juin 1983, n°477).
