Romain ROLLAND (1866-1944). P.S. with some autograph corrections, June 10, 1937; ¾page in-4 typewritten.
Appeal to save two German anti-Nazi resistance fighters from death. [Communist activists Adolf Rembte (1902-1937) and Robert Stamm (1900-1937) were beheaded in Berlin's Plötzensee prison on November 4, 1937].
"We appeal to the opinion of the civilized world to save two honest men - Adolf Rembte and Robert Stamm - from the axe, and a great pacifist and war cripple, the German MP Max Maddalena, from hard labor for life.
The world is used to the inhumanity of Hitler's government. At least, if it had at heart, as it claims, to defend German honor, it would feel bound to respect loyal adversaries, the main one of whom shed his blood on the battlefields, for Germany. Their murderous condemnation, after a trial deprived of the most elementary guarantees, is an assassination".
R. Rolland recalls the interventions of France and England on behalf of the two German aviators "justly condemned by the Bilbao government for having bombed defenseless Basque towns [including Guernica] and killed hundreds of innocent women and children", and urges them to raise their voices "in defense of the lives of the men condemned by the Hitler government for having nobly supported the cause of international peace".
