Marcel PROUST (1871-1922). L.A.S., [Cabourg circa August 11 or 12, 1908], to Céline Cottin; 4pages in-8 (small mourning, crease cracks repaired). Letter from Cabourg to his maid. He thanks Céline for sending him a hot water bottle "which arrived very well thanks to the promptness with which you ordered it and had it sent. My compliments. You haven't given me any news of Nicolas [Céline's husband, then in military training], I hope he's well. By a strange coincidence, the day after he left I was seized with fits. Fearing that I might be ill alone, I sent for Mr. Ulrich [Robert Ulrich, one-time secretary to Proust], but as the price of the hotel was too high, I had him live in another hotel, so I never saw him, and I sent him away, having no need of anyone, for I am better, and have been able to get up every day, it was only a fear". He worries about the carpet in his bedroom and living room, as well as his mattress... You have to ask "Jean Blanc to come three times a week and do the apartment, the dining room too, and install everything. But never leave the windows open at night to keep out damp and thieves. You must have been happy to see Nicolas again before his thirteen days and will be happier to see him afterwards, as I think he will be passing through Paris again and expect him any day now, but if he is unwell, let him stay as long as he likes and let me know"... Correspondence, t.VIII, n°110.
