Louis-Ferdinand CÉLINE. 3 L.A.S. "LFC" (the 1st "Louis Fd"), Copenhagen March-July 1947, to his friend the publisher Jean-Gabriel Daragnès; 2, 3 ½ and 2pages in-fol.
Letters from exile, about the proceedings against him, and about his publishers.
17-2 [sic for March]. He asks for sugar and tea, as there is none left in Denmark; "butter we can do without"... Céline then talks about his publishers: "Sorlot vaguely promises a deposit for the 15th! Oh la tante! he's tough! But that's a laugh - nothing tragic... He's already got the money from the subscribers. He lets it come. La Voiliers [Robert Denoël's mistress, and main shareholder in the publishing house] her purge trial postponed "sine die"! She's a gangster woman - all the vices [...] Ah, I'd like to seduce Fasquelle! I learn that Stalin is fascinated by my books! See what I'm missing!"...
July 5. He thanks the Daragnès for welcoming Mikkelsen. "From the stinking damned that I've been for two years, in a cesspool, I've become the damned who still has excellent friends"... He starts work on his next book Féerie pour une autre fois: "I'll break it down into chapters. The future belongs to no one, least of all me! I'm on the bombardment of Montmartre. I see that the thirst for blood is hardly quenched in France. We'll get to the Atomic Bomb before the amnesty if this goes on"... He asks us to come and see him...
July 25. On Gen Paul: "I think poor Gen is going to dissolve in alcohol. I won't find any more if I ever get back... a few filaments of rigmarole a bit of gall, a few crystals of genius... a jar"... He advises people to go and see Jacques Deval, who is about to return to France... "They're offering to print me in Switzerland and in France too, but I'm scratching myself... Denoël's successors in any case are beautiful bastards! Don't move! Not a word!"...
Attached is a L.A.S., May 1 [1947], to Mme Daragnès (1 page and a half in-4), warning her that Mikkelsen has postponed his trip to Paris. "Our situation has become grim again. I am the object of attacks from the Danish Communist newspaper Land o Folk, which is trying to get the government to take the piss out of me, which thinks it's obvious that I don't belong in hospital, but in France, in the dungeon, on the poles etc."
