Émile ZOLA. L.A.S., Médan September 5, 1882, [to Gaston Rennes, mayor of Vernouillet]; 2pages in-8.
"My valet de chambre is threatened with a procès-verbal for having been caught hunting in the commune of Vernouillet. The whole of Médan was unaware, as he was, of the new decree of the municipal council of this commune, to such an extent that M. Davoust, our mayor, hunted there himself throughout the day of the 3rd. I therefore plead our perfect good faith, and I ask that the procès-verbal not be drawn up and that it only be a warning for us, which would be strictly fair. It seems to me that owners in neighboring communes should have been warned through their mayor. It was a simple measure of good neighborliness, all the more so as the whole of Vernouillet now comes to hunt in Médan, when Médan can no longer hunt in Vernouillet, where it has always hunted"... And he follows his signature with the words "Conseiller municipal de Médan".
