George SAND (1804-1876). L.A.S. "Aurore", Nohant September 28 [sic for November 1823], to Émilie de Cornulier; 2pages and a half in-8, addressed with red wax seal with D numeral. Letter from the young mother to a boarding school friend. [Émilie de Wismes (1804-1862) had recently married the viscount de Cornulier on June 24, 1823]. "Where are you? What are you doing? What's become of you? Have you forgotten me? You don't want to write to me anymore. Do you think only of pleasures, or of your husband? Is everything else nothing to you? Bad Emilie, I'll only forgive you if I receive a letter from you. I wrote you an eternal one. Did you receive it? Did you have the patience to read it? Did it bore you? Tell me to be less prolix, but don't keep me worried. You made me so many promises! Ah, I'm very angry with you; but my resentment won't hold against a few lines from you. I'm too unhappy with you to chat today. Besides, I don't finish when I start, and I only have a moment before the mail leaves. My child [Maurice, born June 30] is fat and greasy, he has two teeth that have made him suffer a little, but he doesn't think about it anymore, and the rose is no more ruddy". She asks her friend for the Italian verses she promised her. "I still live in solitude, if you can believe you're alone when you're face to face with a husband you adore. While he hunts, I work. I play with my little Maurice or read. At the moment, I'm rereading Montaigne's Essais, my favorite author. You're too new a woman to know this work, but if you had the time to read it, I'd recommend it. I have seen you love the naive simplicity of the old language; Montaigne's style would appeal to you"... She had begun to write the address by mistake: "Mademoiselle Émilie de Wismes"; and she adds: "How do you find my distraction?". Correspondance, tome I, n°51.
