Alexandre DUMAS père (1802-1870). Autograph manuscript, Henri Dandolo ou la Conquête de Constantinople, Venetian chronicle; 38 fol. pages (some edges frayed, last page torn and missing). Historical account that seems to have remained unpublished. The doge of Venice, Enrico Dandolo (1107-1205), took part in the Fourth Crusade, the siege and capture of Constantinople in April 1204; he died in Constantinople, where he had remained to fight the Bulgarians, aged 97, and was buried in Saint Sophia. Divided into five parts, this manuscript is left unfinished in the middle of the last page; an annotation at the back of the manuscript states that it was "begun in Naples palais Chiatamone" (where Dumas lived from 1860 to 1862). The story is interrupted on the 2nd page of chapter V, when Emperor Alexis IV Angelo joins the Crusader fleet. On an attached page (in-4, torn), Dumas has jotted down notes on Dandolo's funeral. Attached is a photograph of Dumas by Ch. Reutlinger.
