Alexandre DUMAS père (1802-1870). Autograph manuscript signed "A.D.", Chronique, [ca. 1862]; 2 1/2 pages in-4. Faits divers de Naples, published in Italian, under the title Cronaca, in his Neapolitan newspaper L'Indipendente. "Yesterday a poor woman from the Pennino district, shaking carpets out of her window, fell from the third floor and seriously injured herself on the pavement. If, as in France, it were forbidden in Naples to throw dust on passers-by, this accident would not have happened. Dumas also recounts a dagger fight, the arrest of a man who insulted the public security guard "out of simple distraction", an accident caused by a carriage driver, the revenge of a jealous husband, and the stoning of a pretty girl. He concludes: "In truth, if we were to read such facts elsewhere than in the very reports which the Police communicate to us with an obligingness for which we cannot thank them too much, we would not believe in such a lust for evil".
