Donatien-Alphonse-François, Marquis de SADE. L.A.S., Charenton-St Maurice January 14, 1812; 4pages in-4 filled with small, tight handwriting.
He thanks his correspondent for recommending M. Rose "to take care of my interests in your conses", which he accepts. He asks to receive "the exact model of the power of attorney he deems necessary to act on my behalf". He explains that Mr. Courtois, of Carpentras, "has been managing my affairs for the past 10 years, and since I am not very happy with him in all that has just happened concerning the transfer of my possessions to my children, I have revoked him". Gaufridy d'Apt, "amicably revoked 10 years ago", remained his friend. As for Saumane, he would have to come to an agreement with M. Pepin. He explains his project: "Wishing to reward a man and a woman of whom I have had much to praise in the ten years they have both been in my service, and knowing in the man principally all the qualities that can make him a good concierge, an excellent farmer, and (directed by M. Rose) a good exactor of the rents that may be due, and not wishing on the other hand to keep longer the named Brosseli, who, as you note has made a good illicit gain on the little land he has of mine, that under the vain pretext that it has been 50 years since he is there, [...] I have therefore resolved to establish with the qualities designated above in my property and castle of Saumane the man and woman of whom I have just spoken. But this household must live in the position I am giving them, and they must also pass on to me whatever they can, which will be very little for the first few years, because until they are more settled in their position, I will only ask them to pay me an annuity of one hundred francs a year in Paris; but they must establish themselves, have some furniture, [...] gradually buy some animals. Let's see how we're going to get there, because when the menage arrives, all they'll have are their petticoats, breeches and nightcaps"... Etc.
