Donatien-Alphonse-François, Marquis de SADE. L.A., [Paris] August 3 [1793], to Gaspard Gaufridy "man of law" in Apt; 3 pages and a quarter in-4, address (small tear from broken seal).
On his attitude during the Revolution and his action in the Section des Piques.
After examining the state of his accounts and calculating what Gaufridy still has to send him, he urges him to complete the affair of the sale of Saumane and Arles wheat. He also worries about the certificates of residence he has sent. "N'oubliés surtout quand vous m'enverrez des assignats de ne plus en envoyer a la face du cidevant Louis 16 car il y a un decret formel qui les interdit, et ils n'ont plus absolument aucun espece de cours. N'envoyés plus jamais que des republicains"...
Sade goes on to talk about the complaint he had made to the Minister of the Interior, Roland, about the looting of his Château de La Coste: "It's all going very slowly, here he is, himself indicted, obliged to justify himself [...] it seems to me that you don't see well in the provinces about the Bastille; here it's a great honor to have been there, you boast about it, you print it, and it earns you a kind of consideration".
He begs Gaufridy to send him some money: "I'm ruined, I've given up, I'm spitting blood; I told you I was president of my Section, my outfit has been so stormy I can't take it anymore. Yesterday, after having to cover myself twice, I was forced to leave the chair to my vice-president. They wanted to make me vote for a horror, an inhumanity. I never wanted to; thank God I'm free of it".
About his in-laws, he adds: "During my presidency, I put the Montreuils on a purge list. If I'd said a word, they'd have been badly behaved, so I kept quiet, and this is how I get even.
