Lions demands a certificate of residence: "without it, my mas de Cabane will be sequestered". Sade asks Gaufridy for "a certificate of taxation, to prove that I have only four thousand pounds of annuities". Finally, he adds: "We're in a time of great agitation; the assembly has just been informed that there are 30 or 40 thousand brigands scattered around Paris, and every night there are gatherings".
