René-Pélagie de Montreuil, marquise de SADE (1741-1810). L.A.S. and 2 L.A., 1781-1782, to Marie-Dorothée de Rousset; 4, 6 and 4pages in-4 (slight wetness and wormholes in the 2nd).
Interesting letters from his wife on the marquis's captivity.
August 18 [1781]. Receiving no news, she went to M. Le Noir, who confessed that he kept the Marquis's letters: "elle étois pleine de chose affreuse et entrautre que lon ne desiroi de me voir que pour moter la vie &c". She seeks a room in a convent, but cannot tell the real reason: "it would do Mr de S too much harm"...
November 30, 1781. She carries her letters herself or has them carried by La Jeunesse. She saw her husband "who gave me a power of attorney from himself, and told me the most tender and least frivolous things in the world. It's a total contrast with these cries that I pance nestre pas de lui [...] he's treated with too much rigor, it's the way to turn his head"... She's going to talk to Le Noir about it... It would be necessary to obtain exile to Montélimar...
November 4, 1782 (partly in figures) On the affairs of La Coste and the community of Saumane; the security of the château must be put in order, the guard must be supervised; she has no confidence in the parish priest...
We enclose 3 L.A.S. from her son, Chevalier Louis-Marie de Sade, 1789-an VII.
