VOLTAIRE (1694-1778). L.A.S. "V", Potsdam April 1 [1752], to bookseller Georg Conrad Walther; 4pages in-4, framed.
On the preparation of the edition of his works, notably Anecdotes sur le Czar Pierre le Grand and Pensées sur le Gouvernement.
He received the package "containing the 6th volume [...] It would be important for you that the Anecdotes sur le Czar Pierre et les pensées sur le gouvernement appear. You can ask the Russian ambassador to indicate what should be removed from the anecdotes and to supply what may be to the glory of his nation, and similarly ask the examiner to mark what should be changed in the thoughts on government, and we will work on the spot accordingly".
He is waiting to hear from Paris "whether Rome will still be represented saved after Easter, and whether I can deliver it apresent for printing. I will dedicate this edition in my name".
He will send "la suitte du septieme tome, la preface historique, l'errata, les feuilles corrigées pour les cartons". He points out errors in the second volume: "All this requires a lot of care and work, but I don't complain about my pains when it comes to obliging you".
He will speak to him again about "the other work you want to print in Berlin".
He awaits Walther's reply "on the Virgil. Je mets en ordre les auteurs classiques du Siecle de Louis 14".
He inquired about the printer Nicolaï: "He has only begun to translate into German since the book went on sale in Berlin. You would have spared yourself this competition if you hadn't had the book published until Easter. It's up to you to press your translator in Brunswik to repair this little inconvenience"...
In a postscript, he asks for Crescembeni's Historia della poesia volgare , "ed il rittrato di Roma antica". He adds: "It would be important for the pensees sur le gouvernement or the anecdotes sur le Csar Pierre to appear, because they are quoted in several places in the edition"...
