Marie BONAPARTE (1882-1962). 9 L.A.S. (one incomplete from beginning), Saint-Cloud 1924-1925, to critic and writer Nicolas Ségur; 28pages in-8 or in-12 with his crowned cipher (mostly mourning).
1924. October 3. Thanks for his article in the Revue Mondiale on "my modest book Le Printemps sur mon jardin", about which he wrote "in such a poetic and penetrating way that my visions seemed embellished. Won't you come to this garden one day? Spring is no more, but autumn is beginning to gild the leaves, and I would love, under these soft shades, to chat with you"... - October 18. On Ségur's books, praising "the strong and subtle pages where you dissertate on love, that lever of all forces!" She liked his three novels, was delighted by the accuracy of his portrayal of women, and by the melancholy charm of Mr Renan, but had a preference for Une île d'amour "with its light, frothy fantasy covering philosophical paradoxes and eternal truths"... His friend Dr. Laforgue, "who belongs to Freud's school", was enthralled by a quotation from Renan; he is preparing a work "which has to do with neuroses and psychoanalysis"...
1925. March 3. She has read his Conservations avec Anatole France, ou les Mélancolies de l'intelligence, and would like to discuss it with him: "We'll talk again about these melancholies that you know so well how to evoke, and which, rising to ever higher regions, make your latest book like the ascent of a snowy peak"... - March 12. She is saddened by his sudden departure, which interrupts their talks... - May 25. Invitation to lunch at Saint-Cloud with close friends. - June 15. She sends him back "the charming tale you lent me, which I really enjoyed! She hopes to read other works soon... - October 8. She invites him to lunch, although the mist "envelops the foliage, and great fatigue, after my sorrows this year, keeps me at home. But if you don't mind seeing the trees only through the window, and their friend only lying on a couch, I'll be happy to welcome you"... Etc.
