Paul BERT (1833-1886). Autograph manuscript signed, [1880]; 16 pages in-4. Important article on the great surgeon Paul BROCA (1824-1880), who has just died, published in La République Française of July 11, 1880 (press clipping attached). Paul Bert retraces Broca's scientific and political career, with particular emphasis on his work on aphasia and the advances he made in anthropology. He pays tribute to Broca's heart and mind, expressing "that elegance and clarity of thought, that good humor of intelligence, that alacrity that was always alert and joyful [...] and also those personal qualities of affability, of simple and natural benevolence", his attachment to the Republican party, and so on.
