Carlos SCHWABE (1866-1926). 5 L.A.S., Barbizon [ca. 1895-1896], to Jérôme Doucet; 16 pages in-8. Wednesday. Having been unable to find packing material for the frames he was to send him, Doucet is "obliged to come and break bread with us earlier than planned"... - Saturday. He sent a crate with 4 frames. "I absolutely want 30 proofs of each of these frames, as they are very beautiful and as you have them for next to nothing", he hopes he will grant this legitimate request: "80 on japon and 10 on Watmann". He thanks Doucet for his delicious paper, although he was surprised not to find "the proofs of the first of my plates". There's nothing in the world I'd like to do "to reduce these four frames, as I absolutely want the decoration to extend over the margin". He warns him that if he brings him other drawings of this kind to do, he will categorically refuse: "it's too hard to do - I had to break my skull for days before I could start drawing"... - Wednesday. Two drawings are damaged: "Le pot au feu and Les Dents. [...] They are small pale brown spots which do not affect the purity of the line, but which will completely damage the watercolor". They need to be entrusted to a specialist. He asks Doucet to send him the small sum agreed upon, as he is 400 to 600 francs behind. He is going to write "a few notes about myself and I'll send you at the same time two articles published about me this year"... - Sunday. He's in a hurry for the Champ de Mars, "and immediately after delivery, I have to start on a series for enthusiasts in Lyon: so there's a lot of work to be done"... - Monday. He would like to finally receive the small sum, which is over a month overdue. What's more, he's not happy, as two drawings have come back to him covered in small stains. "In your interest, I must tell you that if I am forced to watercolor over these, these drawings will lose half their value. Remember that later, you'll be able to sell these pages at a very high price - and I mean very high: Holbein and Dürer are the only ones who could do such beautiful decorations (that's without favor). So, make arrangements with the engraver, but I'm disgusted by this lack of attention"...
