Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). 2 autograph manuscripts (one signed) with drawings, 1900; half-page in-4 on yellow paper, and 2 1/2-page oblong in-4.
August 28, 1900, note for a vase project, with drawing, signed "Emile Gallé": "1 cornet en f[or]me de tube ou corolle trilobée avec 3 folioles caliginales en verre contourné [...] Effets de soir. Inlaid orobranch branches in engraved polychrome glass"... Pen-and-ink drawing of the vase in the margin.
Notes and drafts, for his work on Lorraine orchids [he notably published "Orchidées lorraines: formes nouvelles et polymorphisme de l'Aceras hircina", in the Comptes rendus du Congrès international de botanique de 1900], with numerous erasures and corrections. Morphological study of the flowers of various orchids (mainly purpurea, but also militaris, intermedia, simia, anthropophora) and their labellum (median petal whose function is to attract the pollinating insect), with some fifteen drawings representing various labellum shapes and sizes, annotated "too big", "too large", accompanied by precise descriptions and comments on variations in shape and lobe hue. "The influence of a militaris or a simia-militaris on the shape of the labellum is weak, but it alone can explain these deformations, unless one wants to find in the labellum certain carac. of O. antropophora. I don't believe in its inflce in this case". He refers to recent work, notably by German botanists. He is also interested in the system of fertilization by Lepidoptera and the system of reproduction by ovaries... Etc. And he signs "Triangularis".
