[UKRAINE - WEDDING]
Pewter dish given as a gift on the occasion of the groom's speech. Engraved with a long inscription in Hebrew stating that this dish was given on the occasion of the Drasha (speech) of the groom Matitiahou Fishel member of the Hevra Kadishah (Society of the Last Duty) of the town of Morchyne (Ukraine), established in 1836 by the Gabaïm according to the regulations in force in the town.
Dated 1836 in numerals and Hebrew and engraved with two birds holding a flower in their beaks.
Ukraine (Morchyne), 1836.
Diameter: 34 cm

This dish recalls the custom of the groom making a speech and receiving gifts of corresponding value. Later, it became customary to interrupt the groom: either to spare him the shame of losing the thread of his speech, or to spare the audience from paying too much for his speech.
This dish is perhaps one of the last traces of this small Ukrainian Jewish community and its institutions.
