SEIDMANN-FREUD (Tom). Pseudonym for Martha Gertrud Freud. BIALIK (Haim Nachman). Sefer hadevarin. [The Book of Things]. [Sixteen poems by H. N. Bialik and sixteen paintings by Tom Seidmann-Freund]. Copyright 1922 by Verlag "Ophir". Berlin. Gedruckt in der Offizin H. Birkholz. Berlin. [Hebrew edition marks Jerusalem-Berlin]. In-8 (21.3 x 21 cm). (36) pp. publisher's album, blue cloth spine, plates stenciled with color illustrations, three children on a bridge over a river on the first, edition notes in the center of the second. A marvelous achievement for children, entirely hand-colored with stencil and brush, the result of the association of book artist Tom Seidmann-Freud (1892-1930) and the great modern Hebrew poet Haim N. Bialik (1873-1934). Born in the Ukraine, the latter studied and taught in Odessa until 1921, while also pursuing an important literary career. Three years of intense editorial work in Berlin preceded his move to Tel Aviv in 1924. In Berlin, the writer joined forces with several publishing houses, notably Tom's husband Jankew Seidmann (1859-1929), to create Ophir, which published a few rare children's books, mostly illustrated by Tom Seidmann-Freud. Daughter of Marie and Moritz Freud, niece of Sigmund, born in Vienna, she was one of the most important book artists of the 1920s in Germany. A first title in 1914, then a second when she lived in Munich between 1918 and 1920, were published before her marriage in Berlin to the man of letters Jankew Seidmann. Seven short years of exceptional achievement, halted by the couple's tragic end. Although she never took up specifically Hebrew themes, most of her books were destroyed during the Nazi period. Sixteen paintings with the nursery rhymes centered on the facing page. The book was also published in Russian, under the title "The Book of Things and Wonders", and features a variety of animals, a water pump, flowers, a rainbow, a rooster and birds crowing, a sailboat on the sea and a toboggan on the snow, a merry-go-round and a meal at home... Rare work. Pale foxing on the pages, more pronounced on the covers, small tears on the cloth spine and inner hinges reinforced with cloth. Keywords: judaica, jew, jewish, hebrew, rabbis, jewish, torah, hebrew, hebraica, judaism, synagogue, zionism, pessah, pessach, haggada, haggadah, hagada, hagadah, passover, menora, menorah, hannuka, hannuca, hannucca, hanouccah, torah, juden, israélite, Israël, antisemitism, antisémitisme, dreyfus, meguila, sepharade, sefarad, ketouba
