SEIDMANN-FREUD (Tom). Pseudonym for Martha Gertrud Freud. Buch der erfüllten Wünsche. [Book of fulfilled desires]. Ein Bilderbuch von Tom Seidmann-Freud. Müller & Kiepenheuer Verlag. [Potsdam. 1929]. In-4 (26 x 22.2 cm). (24) pp. cream cloth spine, first cover lithographed in color, two little girls holding flowers, animals and a boat in their hands, under a wide red band with the title in white. Unique, sought-after edition of Tom Seidmann-Freud's (1892-1930) work "produced at the peak of his picture-book creativity and constituting his most complex and accomplished work." The Potsdam publishers Müller and Kiepenheuer took the risk of publishing it in 1929. The editorial attention they paid to it made this avant-garde picture book one of the "50 best books of 1929". Despite this, it has remained largely unsold, which is why it is so rare today. Tom Seidmann-Freud's penultimate work. In twelve stories, twenty-six large compositions in the text and two central plates, based on the artist's wonderful watercolors, show the spiritual roots of his artistic work and are also based on new pedagogical trends. Cubist and Futurist elements, stylization and association of forms, where simplicity is only apparent and psychoanalytic thought is apparent. The author-artist addresses a final message at the end of the book: "To the boys and girls who have read and looked at this little book. We, the 65 drawn children, hope that we exist before you. We hope that all your wishes, yours and ours, (i.e. the clever ones, not the stupid ones) will come true, and soon!" Covers soiled and edges of boards rubbed, corners dulled. Interior in perfect condition. Barbara Murken. Kinder und Jugend Literatur -Ein Lexikon-. Deutschen Akademie für Kinder- und Jugendliteratur. e.V., Volkach. 2016.
