NERUCHEV (A.) [TOLSTOI (Lev)].
Ha-Tanim veha-pil. [The Jackals and the Elephant].
[Illustrations by A. Neruchev]. Omanut. Frankfurt am Main. Moscow. Odessa. [1922]. In-12 oblong (15.5 x 21 cm). (16) pp. including covers: olive-green strong paper covers, the first lithographed in color, an elephant with a jackal in front of its trunk, publisher's initials in the center of the second.

First edition of color lithographs by Anatoly Vasilyevitch Neruchev and a rare work in Hebrew written and illustrated by two Russians.
Cover and six plates with Tolstoy's text in Hebrew in an ornate facing frame. Six out-of-text paintings in sepia tones, green, yellow and gray, with the artist's almost total absence of shadows and perspective.
Tolstoy's terrible tale - as is often the case in Russian stories for young readers. Hungry jackals invite the elephant to follow them to become their king, since the previous one gave them impossible orders. Driven into a swamp, the elephant gets stuck and orders the jackals to pull him out. They replied, "You too order us to do things we can't do". The elephant dies in the mud, and they eat him.
Twelfth and rare last title from the Gamliel library, in perfect condition.
