LISSITZKY (El). RASKIN (Uncle Ben Zion). Der Milner, di Milnerin un di Milshtayner. [The Miller, the Miller and their millstones]. [Publisher]. "Kultur-Lige. Warszawa. 1922. In-8 (23 x 19.8 cm). 14, (1) f.: brown-red percaline spine, ochre boards, the first lithographed in green and sepia with a rooster and child in an oval underlined by the title. Second edition, also sought-after and published in Warsaw, of a rare work for children, illustrated by Lissitzky (1890-1941) in 1919. In Kiev, with the "Éditions populaires yiddish", he signed a contract for eleven future titles. The series would be called "Kindergarten" and would feature the same Lissitzky illustration on the cover of each book (a rooster holding the title, a child with outstretched arms underneath). Only three books would see the light of day: all dated 1919 and written by poet, writer and teacher Ben Zion Raskin (1890-1930). A story with refrains: the village lord has stolen the miller's millstones: the ones that yield flour (when asked aloud) for the week's bread and for Shabbat bread. The miller sends his horse to retrieve them, the lord steals the horse, and so do the cow and goat. The rooster says, "I'll get the millstones", sticks his beak in the lord's right ear and promises to do the same with the left. The frightened lord returns the millstones, the rooster takes them under his wings and all the animals return home, where they still live today. Unlike the first edition in black [without hardback], the artist's illustrations in this book are in green, combined with the sepia of the text, still in Yiddish. Smiling, moving compositions, inspired by children's drawings and typical of a pivotal period in the artist's evolution. The Yiddish edition number indicates an edition of 2000 copies. Lower corners of boards restored and bent, restoration also at head near spine, inner hinges reinforced and staples replaced with linen thread. Keywords: judaica, jew, jewish, hebrew, rabbis, jewish, torah, hebrew, hebraica, judaism, synagogue, zionism, pessah, pessach, haggada, haggadah, hagada, hagadah, passover, menora, menorah, hannuka, hannuca, hannucca, hanouccah, torah, juden, israélite, Israël, antisemitism, antisémitisme, dreyfus, meguila, sepharade, sefarad, ketouba
