[DREYFUS - ZOLA]
Autograph letter signed "A Dreyfus", replying to his correspondent Ferdinand Dreyfus, lawyer and journalist, "le 14 sept" [1908], i.e. 3 days after the announcement of the Assize Court verdict acquitting Louis Gregori.
He wrote: "... You can be sure that I am not moved by the imbecile verdict of the Seine jury, which answers no to the question: is he guilty of assault and battery? This is quite simply lying to the truth...".
1 page in-8.
On June 4, 1908, Louis Gregori, a journalist and Drumont's assistant, fired two bullets from a revolver, hitting Dreyfus in the arm and forearm. The attack took place at the end of the ceremony for the transfer of Émile Zola's ashes to the Panthéon. Although Commandant Dreyfus was only slightly wounded, the main aim of the attack was to disrupt the ceremony by targeting "the two traitors": Zola and Dreyfus. His trial took place on September 10, 1908, and the verdict was announced the very next day. The public prosecutor's indictment was surprisingly lenient, reclassifying the facts as "assault and battery" and ruling out attempted homicide.
