Thomas Mahy, Marquis de FAVRAS (1744-1790) agent of the Count of Provence (the future Louis XVIII), he was involved in a conspiracy in 1790 and died without revealing the name of his leader. L.A.S., Abbaye prison January 7, 1790, to "Messieurs"; 1page in-4.
Beautiful and rare letter from prison.
He is distressed by the reinforcement of precautions around him and wonders why: "It is an illusion, it is a dream for me, that all that happens to me is the fatality of inductions, no doubt plausible in your eyes, which, by misleading your judgment, cause both my adversity and that of an adorable wife". He is told that his case has been sent to the Châtelet: "Is it you, is it he whom I must implore to obtain the start of proceedings? To exonerate myself in the eyes of the Nation, in the eyes of the Universe, will be for me a new existence; please take care that each day makes a deeper impression of the character of the unspeakable crimes imputed to me by the libellists; [...] to prolong the term so desired by me of my justification would be to confirm in some way the general opinion that you surely have as much at heart as I do to see disproved"...
[Arrested on December 25, 1789, he was condemned by the Tribunal du Châtelet and hanged on February 18, 1790].
Two printed documents are enclosed: Jugement en dernier ressort qui condamne à mort Thomas Mahy de FAVRAS (Paris 1790) and Acte de Foi de Madame de Favras, 4 pages in-8.
