She thanks him for his New Year's letter, and expresses her affection: "Neither time nor distance can make me forget my dear little children, whom I love and cherish as much absent as present". She encourages him to write her a letter that is not "mere propriety", giving her "the certainty that you have not forgotten Bonne maman". She charges him "with ten thousand tender things for me to Mom and Dad"...
