Pierre BONNARD (1867-1947). L.A.S., [Paris] 8 rue de Parme, December 3, 1889, to his mother; 4pages in-8. Early letter. The young Bonnard, who is staying with his grandmother [Caroline Mertzdorff], has applied to join the administration, and hopes "to be appointed in a relatively short time". It's very cold: "We're going skating. I've bought myself a huge pipe that'll make you recoil in horror a big English burner to smoke on the ice you know it's extremely chic". He works in his bedroom "on the portrait of Andrée [his sister]. It's starting to look like something, but I'll need the model. Opinions are very divided on the merits of my painting; as for me, I'm very happy and that's enough for me". He gives news of his health and is going to buy "a real winter coat"...
