François GERARD, known as BARON GERARD and ATELIER
Portrait of Camille, Prince Borghese, Duke of Guastalla (1775-1832), Governor of Piedmont
Original canvas
30.7 x 21.3 cm
Inscribed on the reverse of the stretcher "Le Pce B...".

Gérard's painting, which served as the model for the Versailles ricordo, was executed in 1810 and is now in a private collection.

Baron Gerard's 1810 painting is now in a private collection. Prince of the Empire Camille Borghese, son of the great collector Marc-Antoine Borghese, was a member of one of the most influential Italian families of the time. He married Napoleon's sister, Pauline Bonaparte, and was granted the Duchy of Guastalla in what is now northern Italy. He returned to the Emperor's service and distinguished himself by his military and diplomatic skills during the campaigns in Austria, Prussia and Poland. In 1807, he enriched the collections of Vivant-Denon's Musée du Louvre by donating part of the prestigious Borghese collection of antiques, at the request of his brother-in-law.

We would like to thank Mr. Alain Latreille for sharing his opinion with us: "All these ricordi were produced in the painter's studio under his supervision and sometimes retouched, and are comparable with the set kept at the Château de Versailles, purchased by King Louis-Philippe's civil list at the sale after the painter's death in 1837".
