Jacques BLANCHARD (Paris, 1600 - 1638)
The Holy Family with a dish of cherries
Canvas
94 x 76 cm
(Old restorations)

Our painting is similar to the composition of Repos de l'Enfant Jésus, also known as La Sainte Famille à la bouillie (Canvas, 91 x 124 cm) in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe and La Sainte Famille avec sainte Elisabeth et saint Jean (five figures) (Canvas, 76 x 109 cm) in the Musée du Louvre. The luminous pulpits, powerful forms and neutral backgrounds marked by shadows situate our work in his Parisian years around 1620, 1630. The brilliant blue of the Virgin's drapery is found in La Mort de Lucrèce (Canvas, 74 x 61 cm) from the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes. See the Jacques Blanchard exhibition catalog, Rennes, Musée des Beaux-Arts, March 6 - June 8, 1998.
