Charles-Édouard JEANNERET dit LE CORBUSIER (1887 - 1965)
Icon, 1956
Collage of gouache and watercolor papers and Indian ink on Craft paper.
Signed, monogrammed and dated lower left.
41 x 55.5 cm

A certificate from Mr. Eric Mouchet will be given to the buyer.

This collage was inspired by Le Corbusier's 1956 painting Taureau XIII - Naissance du Minotaure, one of the few horizontal themes in the suite of 18 subjects in the "Taureaux" series. Here, there's no ambiguity as to who's being represented: the theme is titled by the artist himself "Naissance du Minotaure" (Birth of the Minotaur), when the monster's head appears under the hands of his mother Pasiphaé. In the absence of the Minotaur's head, he simply calls it an icon, as in this case. The window, the curtain on the right and the lamp on the ceiling clearly situate the scene in an interior, but the lamp is above all a tribute to Picasso.
