This is the biblical episode of the Brazen Serpent (Numbers XXI 6-9); the Hebrews, tired of wandering in search of the Promised Land, had murmured against God, who punished them by sending them poisonous snakes. The people repented, and Moses, at Yahweh's command, erected a bronze snake atop a pole, and those who looked at it were saved from the snakes' bites.
