Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827). L.A.S., April 22, 1816, to Anton Pachler; 2 pages in-8, address with trace of seal; in German (tear to address leaf due to breakage of seal, slight foxing). He asks Pachler to do him a great favor this very day by accompanying him in the afternoon to Alstergaße, where the house is to be appraised. Tell him in writing where he can pick him up around 3.30 p.m. He's still not feeling well, otherwise Pachler would have seen him home long ago. His friend Beethoven in a hurry. The lawyer Anton Pachler had been connected with Beethoven since 1811; In 1816, he had introduced him to his sister-in-law Maria Leopoldine née Koschak (1794-1855), who had married his elder brother, Dr. Carl Pachler, a Graz lawyer; Beethoven had appreciated the playing of the excellent pianist Mrs. Pachler. This may be an estimate of the estate of his brother Karl (died November 15, 1815), who in his will had entrusted him with the shared guardianship of his son; we know that Beethoven would be dramatically tormented by his nephew's guardianship. It is also likely that Beethoven was looking for a house; when he arrived in Vienna in 1792-1793, he lived at number 45 Alstergasse]. Publication: letter published and annotated by Robert Münster, Unbekannte oder wenig beachtete Schriftstücke Beethovens , in Beethoven-Jahrbuch (Jahrggang 1978/1981, Beethovenhaus Bonn, 1983, pp. 50-54); offprint enclosed, with portrait. Provenance: collection of Josephine Rudolph-Tichatscheck (1841-1912, daughter of tenor Josef Tichatscheck); gift from her (Aunt Rudy) to Belgian tenor Ernest Van DYCK (1861-1923); then descent. [See nos. 214-216].
