Pierre Trémaux (1818-1895) was a French architect, explorer and Orientalist photographer who made several trips to North Africa and the Mediterranean, from which he brought back observation notes, accounts, watercolors, drawings, photographs and even natural history collections. These travel souvenirs provided the raw material for his many publications, of which Parallèle des édifices anciens et modernes du continent africain is an impressive example, published between 1852 and 1862.
