Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669) Abraham receiving the three angels. 1656. Etching and drypoint. 130 x 159. Bartsch 29; Hind 286; New Hollstein 295. A very fine proof on cream laid paper, loaded with barbs, the copper edges heavily inked. Minor pen and ink retouching, notably dotted along the square line on the right and in places within the subject. Slight (barely perceptible) reinforcement in the corners on verso. Fragment of watermark. Provenance: G. A. H. Jan Buisman Jzn. (1930-2005), Christie's sale, March 29, 2006, no. 5. "For the placement of the figures in the print [Rembrandt] probably took his inspiration from a Mogul miniature with four bearded sheiks that is now in Vienna. A drawn copy in London, which he made c. 1656-61, proves that Rembrandt knew this exotic work." (E. Hinterding, Rembrandt Etchings from the Frits Lugt Collection, vol. I, Busum, THOTH Publishers, Paris, Fondation Custodia, 2008, p. 72).
