Large covered polychrome cloisonné vase, Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) The wide body is decorated with two reserves with curved edges on a pink background, one featuring a peacock among peonies and plum blossoms; the other a peahen amid magnolias. The rest of the vase on a yellow background covered with butterflies amid leafy foliage. Stylized friezes around the foot, neck and base of the lid. The lid features the same decoration as the vase, with a large tama-shaped handle decorated with a polychrome enameled hoho on a turquoise-blue background. The interior and base of the vase are enameled green. Height: 131 cm This type of vase, of exceptional dimensions, could have been presented at a world's fair to showcase the dexterity of Japanese artists.
